Ramadan

Dear Friend,

Please could we ask you to take two minutes to read this important letter for the sake of our brothers and sisters in Palestine.

Palestinians are suffering as the Israeli state continues to steal their land and water, and destroy their homes and lives. If we buy or sell Israeli produce, we are giving money to Israel and helping Israel to continue its unjust actions.

Palestinians have asked people across the world to support them by refusing to buy produce from Israel and its illegal Settlements. Millions of people are already supporting Palestinians in this way.

We are writing to ask you to respect the wishes of Palestinians in their just struggle for freedom, equality and justice. So please could we request you not to sell Israeli or Settlement produce in your shop. Ramadan will be starting soon and so we would like to ask you especially not to order or sell dates labelled from 'Israel' or from the 'Jordan Valley'.

Please avoid the following brands which are from Israel or illegal Settlements:

Jordan Plains

Jordan Valley

King Solomon

Jordan River

Hadiklaim

Most Medjoul dates are Israeli. There are lots of different types of dates apart from Medjoul. But if you would like Medjoul dates from Palestine which help Palestinian farmers, they are available from Zaytoun www.zaytoun.org

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. If you would like more information please contact us at oxfordpsc@yahoo.com.

Yours in peace,

David Hillman, Chair, Oxford PSC

Palestinian Medjoul dates on sale in the Covered Market

Do take the opportunity to buy some of the really nice quality Palestinian dates that are on sale at McCarthy's veg stall in the covered market. (i don't think it has its name displayed prominently, but it is the first stall as you come in from Market Street.) You can buy them loose, or (for a bit of a price) in a lovely box. The man on the stall is also displaying a Palestinian flag at the back of the stall, so do support him.

Upcoming Events: Local

Every Saturday 11.30-1.30pm: OXFORD PSC STALL in Cornmarket by St Michael at Northgate church. The OPSC Saturday street stall on Cornmarket Street is one of the main ways we use for raising the issue of Palestine with the public at large. It is an important activity for offering information leaflets to the public, inviting them to join PSC or leave their email for Oxford PSC updates. Generally we are there 11:30 to 13:30. Always a minimum of two people on shift. Please consider volunteering for a shift: it’s an opportunity to meet other PSC members, those wanting information and occasionally those wishing to challenge our views, even volunteering for one shift a year would help. Please email ali at OPSCstall@gmail.com if you're able to help.

Contacting shops about Israeli dates

To start our BDS campaign this Ramadan we have takenletters to shops, delis, restaurants on the Cowley Road asking them not to stock dates from israel..Thankss to those who helped take letters and talk to managers and others in shops and restaurants.

It was a very good afternoon with most shops being very receptive and none of the small shops (as far as we could see) stocking any dates from Israel (one shop said they hadn't stocked any dates from Israel since talking to us last year.).

If there are shops in other areas that you know that you would be able to talk to about Israeli dates, and give a copy of the letter we have put together, please do go ahead. I'm attaching a copy of the letter.

Thanks

Pam

We shall be organizing future events on Palestinian prisoners, on racism and Israel, and on the plight of Christians in Palestine. We shall also visit restaurants, delis, and supermarkets informing them about Palestinian produce and calling for a boycott of Israeli dates at Ramadan.
